1. Fort Knox FTK-PB
The Fort Knox FTK-PB is our
personal "bump in the night" safe and what we recommend to all our
friends.
It's heavy (20 lbs, ten gauge
thickness), boltable, and uses the mechanical Simplex lock, which is super fast
and easy to use in the dark. Not the cheapest at $240.
Plus, depending on how you
want to stack them, it holds 2-3 pistols plus some mags.
One negative is that there
are only 1081 combinations, so if you have a teen who knows how and has
patience with Google, you need to work on hiding it or teaching them to respect
your guns.
2. GunVault GV1000C
If you want to spend a small
budget on electronics, GunVault is a big player in the field. Since it is
intuitive, large enough for two handguns, cable-secure, and decently strong, I
like their GV1000 (16 gauge).
The 9V battery life is about
a year, and you'll hear a warning from the battery before it dies.
3. GunVault NV300
NanoVault
Another GunVault. We used the
NV300 for travel, so in the car, it's legal... and an extra layer of safety
where we stayed. A full-size Glock 17 and two mags fit tightly and have holes
for securing a cable.
4. Vaultek Lifepod
The Vaultek Lifepod is now my
travel case when I drive and stay somewhere, too. Buttons, since they are
capacitive, work well even when wet. When I go down for the night, I like
having the latches undone but still locked.
5. SentrySafe QAP1Be
The QAP1BE can open this
highly rated safe... buttons, fingerprint scanner, or backup key in three
different ways. Lovely thick steel at 12 gauge, too.
It can hold up to two
weapons, but we think one full-size and two mags could be the realistic maximum
without stacking.
6. Vaultek VT20i
& VT10i
There are key, electronic
button, fingerprint, and Bluetooth phone app options for these Vaultek bad-boys
to open up. If that matters to you, they look and feel fantastic too. We tested
the biometric reader, and the reliability factor was approximately 90 percent. Good
for when you don't need it in a hurry, 100 percent.
A full-sized pistol and two
mags hold the VT10i ($229). Simultaneously, the bigger VT20i can hold even
larger guns ($255) (maybe two compacts). They can hold long guns and are much
larger (and more costly) than their handgun-only counterparts. Also, you don't
need to spend too much to get all you want. You get a better aesthetic after a
while.
7. Stack-On 8-Gun
Cabinet
As it's technically a cabinet
with a lock, the Stack-On is what I would suggest as a "safe"
starter. No rating from RSC on this one. It has a key lock, but it's not going
to resist a lot of prying, with 18 gauge steel sides and a weight of 64 lbs
(even with it bolted down). Dimensions are 10′′ x 21′′ x 55′′.
8. Liberty ProVault
or Centurion
I chose the largest Liberty
ProVault 24-gun (59.5′′ x 28.25′′ x 22′′) since it was going to be an overflow
safe for my newer guns. Since we didn't want to deal with batteries, the
mechanical lock. The 12 and 18 gun models are also there, which is what we
recommend after my experience.
9. SecureIt Agile
Model 52
So the ProVault 24 that we
got... was initially for our closet. We measured it twice (and purchased it
once) with an inch to spare.
And when the day came, I
realized that I couldn't move the 375 lb safe in my closet without destroying
anything.
10. Winchester Pony
19 & Ranger 26
The Winchester Pony 19 Gun
($850) is a mid-size safe that is popular and can hold most collections, and is
not too heavy to deal with on your own.
A great way to keep your
firearms is to own the Best gun safe. When you want to
protect your family and keep your guns and ammunition out of the wrong hands,
it is also ideal. While it's a right of passage for hunters and gun enthusiasts
alike, with so many sizes, features, and available options, picking the perfect
safe can seem overwhelming. To help you find the ideal gun that is safe for you
and your family, we have put together a quick review.
Count Your Firearms
Choosing the right safe gun
begins by counting your firearms and finding a model that can hold all of your
own. Be sure to leave some space for expansion if you intend to add to your
collection. Besides, as well as door-mounted pistol pockets and displays, you
may wish to have space for ammunition. Just be warned, the more secure a gun
is, the heavier it will be. If you want to install it upstairs, some of
the Best gun safes weigh over 500 pounds and require
extra floor support.
Fireproof and
Waterproof
Look for models that are
resistant to water damage and fire if you are interested in preserving your
firearms for future generations. Most safeguards offer a lot of resistance to
fire. Some can last at 1,200 degrees for up to 60 minutes. But few list the
protection of water as a benefit.
Locks - Digital
vs. Dial
Are you interested in
technology? Or do you prefer the charm of the old school? It is relatively
straightforward to select the lock for your safety. While digital locks,
including battery power, have some drawbacks, they are much quicker to open in
an emergency.
Storing One Single
Firearm
Locking a pistol and
ammunition away makes perfect sense, but it can be vital to have access to that
firearm when you need it. Behind some impressive authentication, small vaults
can hold a single pistol-and the entire safe can often fit in a nightstand or
on a shelf in the closet. Finger-swipe technology is included in some models.
Selecting Your
Accessories
With all of the accessories
and options available, gun safes can appear a lot like a new model truck. Think
about how you want to display your rifles and handguns when you are shopping
for your new safe. For pistol racks and rod kits, most safes include shelves.
With special electrical outlet kits, you can even choose to add a light to the
inside of your safe.
